There is quite an interesting history to marijuana in America, dating back to 1545 when the Spanish brought marijuana to America. The English brought marijuana to Jamestown in 1611. It became a huge commercial crop alongside tobacco. From 1850 to 1942, marijuana was listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia as a prescription for rheumatism, labor pains, and nausea. It was also used as an intoxicant by many people from the 1850s to the 1930s. By 1890, marijuana had been replaced by cotton as a major cash crop. There was a small percentage of medicines that had marijuana in it, compared to the large number that had much more dangerous drugs in it, such as cocaine.
